Landfill Redevelopment
Darien, CT
Client: AvalonBay
Communities, Inc.
Description: This
32 acre former landfill and gravel quarry
located at the convergence of three railroad
lines and the Noroton River was purchased by
AvalonBay for conversion into a residential
apartment community. The site's physical
features also included the remnants of an
approximately 660 square foot, partially
demolished and dilapidated, brick wastewater
pumping station. Now just beyond the
bright lights of New York City, this former
landfill has been transformed into a tranquil
setting of beautiful apartments, landscaped
picnic areas and heated pools. Triton
performed site investigations, remedial
investigation, and provided comprehensive
remedial oversight during redevelopment and
landfill closure.
The project team collected site
characterization data and evaluated a former
filled area and areas of suspected oil and
hazardous material releases. The project
team conducted soil sampling activities,
installed groundwater monitoring wells to
evaulate groundwater quality, and completed soil
vapor monitoring activities. Assistance
was also provided in the demolition of a former
wastewater pumping station.
Role: Landfill
closure, environmental site assessments (Phase
I, Phase II, Phase III), soil and groundwater
investigation, and LEP oversight during
redevelopment and construction.
